Understanding Your Materials

Figure 1: Fence Anatomy

Before you buy, here is a quick breakdown of what you need:

1. Posts (4x4)

These are the anchors of your fence. We calculate posts based on standard 8-foot spacing. For privacy fences, these are crucial for wind resistance.

2. Rails (2x4)

The horizontal "ribs" of the fence. A 6ft fence needs 3 rails per section to prevent boards from warping. A 4ft fence typically uses only 2 rails.

3. Pickets (1x6)

The face of your fence. If you chose "Privacy", we calculate them side-by-side. If you chose "Picket", we leave a gap for that classic look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should I dig my post holes?
A general rule is to bury 1/3 of the post's length. For a 6ft fence, you should dig at least 24 inches deep. In cold climates, dig below the frost line to prevent heaving.
How far apart should fence posts be?
The standard spacing is 8 feet apart. However, for high-wind areas or heavier wood, some builders prefer 6 feet spacing for extra strength.
Should I use screws or nails?
Screws are recommended. Nails can pop out over time as wood expands and contracts. Exterior-grade deck screws hold tighter and make it easier to replace boards later.
Does this calculator include concrete?
Yes! We estimate 1.5 bags (50lb) of concrete per post. This ensures a solid foundation for your fence.
